What are STDs?
STD stands for Sexually Transmitted Disease (sometimes called Sexually Transmitted Infection). This is an infection which can be caught by having sexual contact with someone who is infected. This can be vaginal, oral or anal sex, although other types of touching can pass some STDs - for example, some STDs (such as Herpes and HPV) can be caught by touching the infected areas of someone's body and then touching your own genitals (private parts). Introducing the LifeGuard Youth Development
Wyman Teen Outreach Program® (TOP®)
- Integrated with Core subjects
- Used as an in-school elective
- Serve as an after-school program; or
- Serve as a component of an out-of-school enrichment program. This might include a social club, recreational program or other "gap" time activity.
What will youth learn?
There are three essential goals to help teens build a foundation for success:
- Healthy Behaviors that promote positive, constructive actions that pave the way for a lifetime of success while reducing incidences of teen pregnancy, re-occurring pregnancies and incarceration
- Life Skills that build competencies necessary for youth to mature into healthy, self-sustaining adults
- Sense of Purpose that inspires a positive self worth as they contribute to their communities through meaningful service
Is the Program Successful?
YES! TOP® is successful because it provides schools, organizations and communities with a flexible, tested framework for creating or enhancing local youth development efforts. TOP® is also successful because the curriculum includes four age appropriate levels. Among the core studies are:
- Communication and assertiveness
- Relationships and Self Worth
- Goal Setting and Decision Making
- Development and Healthy Living
- Community Service Learning
How can my school or organization take part in the program?
